Western Illinois Men's Soccer Falls in Exhibition

Leathernecks back in action on Monday

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a home exhibition against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start, the Leathernecks mounted a comeback, but fell short, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Flames.

UIC scored the first goal of the match in the sixth minute as Andres Lemus headed in a corner kick. The Flames added a second goal, giving UIC a 2-0 lead at the break.

Western Illinois cut the deficit in half as Kyle Owen headed in a Jimmy Baars' pass to make it a 2-1 UIC lead at the 53 minute, four second mark.

The Flames made a two-goal lead 14 minutes later, taking a 3-1 lead.

The Leathernecks responded at the 83:26 mark as Liam Gainey took a long feed, maneuvered around two defenders and the UIC keeper, before scoring. Western Illinois continued to mount an attack but could not score the equalizer.

The Leathernecks finished with nine shots, two on goal.

Keeper Ramy Atia finished with four saves, playing the entire second half while Youssou Ouendeno started in net and finished with two saves.
Western Illinois plays another exhibition match on Monday, hosting Southeastern. The match follows the Leatherneck women, who take on Northeast at 3 p.m.
