Bell Sets Record as Leathernecks Drop Opener

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell 7-4 to #12 Oral Roberts at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Thursday (May 18).

Oral Roberts struck first as they plated a run in the top of the first and third inning to take an early 2-0 lead. WIU responded in the bottom of the third inning, tieing the game at two. J.R. Heavilin started the frame with a hustle double. After the Leatherneck's next batter was retired, Kyree Alexander drove a ball to deep center field for a two-run home run to tie the game at two.

After ORU responded with a run in the top of the fourth inning, WIU would tie the game back up. Derek Botaletto singled to start the fourth inning. Adam Juran advanced Botaletto with two outs to second base with an infield single. J.R. Heavilin brought Botaletto around with an RBI single to center field, tieing the game back up at 3-3.

Defense on both sides would be on lockdown as they would hold each other scoreless for the next three innings.

Heading into the 8th inning with the game tied at 3-3, Oral Roberts would strike for three runs breaking the game open 6-3. Western would respond in the bottom of the 8th inning, striking for a run. Nick Mitchell would drive a line drive off the center field fence for a one-out double. Derek Botaletto would bring Mitchell with a two-out RBI single to center field. Jake Allgeyer kept the train moving with a two-out single, advancing Botaletto to second base. The Leathernecks would be unable to bring in any runs in the 9th inning as they would fall 7-4.

Caden Kratz had a gem on the mound Thursday afternoon. The senior went 7.0 strong innings allowing just three runs, striking out two. Jack Bell took over in the 8th inning out of the bullpen setting a new WIU record for career appearances at 73.

Western Illinois hitters totaled nine hits as a team. Botaletto, Allgeyer, and Heavilin all totaled multi-hit games. Alexander led the team with two RBI on his two-run home run. Nick Mitchell and Heavilin had both extra-base hits for the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois and Oral Roberts continue their three-game series on Friday (May 19). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
