Leathernecks Fall to No. 12 Oral Roberts

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell in game two of a three-game set with the No. 12 Oral Roberts on Friday (May 19) afternoon 12-2.

Oral Roberts struck first with a three-run top of the 1st inning. Western Illinois responded in the bottom 1st inning with a run of their own. Ricky Pospisil singled to center with one out to start the Leathernecks rally. Pospisil would work his way around the base paths advancing to second base on a wild pitch and third base on a passed ball. Derek Botaletto would bring Pospisil the final 90 feet with an RBI single to center field, bringing the game to a 3-1 score. WIU kept the pressure on the Golden Eagles as they would load the bases, but a ground out would stop the scoring threat.

Derek Botaltto would score WIU's second run all by himself. The senior from Omaha, Nebraska, reached on an error by ORU third basemen. He would steal second base, putting himself in a scoring position. Jake Allgeyer advanced Botaletto to third on a ground out, and Botaletto would bring himself home on a wild pitch cutting the WIU deficit back to two, 4-2.

ORU scored eight unanswered runs to end the game taking game two 12-2.

Derek Botaletto and Kyree Alexander had two-thirds of the WIU hits on the afternoon. Botaletto and Alexander both tallied two base knocks. Max Slavens and Ricky Pospisil had the other two of the six total hits. Botaletto was active on the base paths, as he had two stolen bases. Steven Walsh drew a walk in the 9th and stole second base giving WIU three total stolen bases.

Western Illinois and Oral Roberts finish the regular season in their series finale at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with senior day activities starting at 12:40 p.m.
