WIU Falls at Home 9-3

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball fell to in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (May 16) afternoon. The Leathernecks got an early 1-0 lead before losing 9-3 to the Panthers at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

Western Illinois jumped in front in the 2nd inning as Chase VanDerGinst would give WIU the 1-0 lead with a one-out solo home run over the right field fence. VanDerGinst's home run was the second of the season.

Eastern Illinois struck for five runs in the top of the 5th inning before WIU would get one back in the bottom half. Adam Juran led off the inning with a single to left field. He would advance to second base on a wild pitch and third base on a Max Slavens flyout. With two out, Kyree Alexander brought in Juran with a double down the left-field line cutting EIU's lead to three (5-2).

The Leathernecks cut into the EIU lead again in the 6th inning. Rick Pospisil singled to left field to lead off the inning. Derek Botaletto would ground into the fielder's choice putting WIU with a runner on first base with one out. Jake Allgeyer followed Botaletto's fielders choice with a single to center that advanced Botaletto to third. VanDerGinst would drive in his second run of the day with a single to first base decreasing the deficit to 5-3.

Eastern Illinois would score four more runs on their way to a 9-3 win.

Western Illinois brought in seven hits as a team today. Ricky Pospisil and Chase VanDerGinst led with two hits each. Kyree Alexander, Pospisil, and VanDerGinst gave WIU three extra-base hits on the day.

The Leathernecks wrap up their regular season with a three-game homestand against Oral Roberts. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Thursday (May 18).
