WIU Takes Series in 5-4 Win.

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team won for the fifth time in six games as they defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 5-4 on Sunday (May 14) in St. Paul, Minn.

Jake Armstrong started his second game in a week against St. Thomas. After picking the 5-2 win in game one of the six-game stretch, Armstrong began with back-to-back scoreless innings before WIU would get on the scoreboard.

Kyree Alexander started the 3rd inning by reaching second base on a throwing error by St. Thomas. Nick Mitchell followed Alexander with a walk putting runners on first and second base. Ricky Pospisil bunted them over 90 feet, allowing Derek Botaletto to bring Alexander on a sacrifice flyout. Jake Allgeyer kept the train moving as he grounded a ball through the right side of the infield and into right field, bringing in Mitchell and giving WIU an early 2-0 lead.

St. Thomas fought back for a run in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Leathernecks got back on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th inning as Ricky Pospisil led off the inning with a home run to left field.

Heading into the top of the 8th inning, the Leathernecks and Tommies were tied at three runs apiece. Max Slavens drew a leadoff walk advancing to second base on an Alexander sacrifice bunt. Mitchell would bring him around to score with a triple to in the right-center gap giving WIU the 4-3 lead. The Leathernecks could not score anyone else in the frame, stranding baserunners on first and third base.

St. Thomas tied the game up in the bottom of the 8th inning, scoring a run. That lead would not last long as WIU would strike for the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th inning. With one out in the 9th inning, Adam Juran took a 3-2 pitch and sent it over the left field fence, putting WIU ahead 5-4.

The Tommies would get runners in scoring position in the 9th inning, but Jack Bell would shut the door picking up his second win of the season.

Western Illinois totaled double-digit hits for the sixth game in a row. The Leathernecks knocked around ten hits on the day. Nick Mitchell led the team with three hits in his four at-bats, extending his on-base streak to 30 games. Chase VanDerGinst also had a multi-hit day going 2-3. The Leathernecks used the extra-base hit again, slugging two home runs, a double, and a triple. As a team, the Leathernecks drew ten walks and stole a base.

Western Illinois is back in action with four home games this upcoming week. The Leathernecks start with in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (May 17) and welcome Oral Roberts for the final three-game series of the year starting on (May 19).
