Leathernecks Dominate Tommies 13-3

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team takes game two of the three-game series against the St. Thomas Tommies 13-3. WIU used a six-run 6th inning and four runs in the 7th inning to pull ahead, forcing the 10-run rule into effect.

WIU offense started early in Saturday's matchup. Ricky Pospisil drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a Derek Botaletto RBI triple. Botaletto came around to score on a wild pitch giving WIU a 2-0 lead.

St. Thomas would score a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, cutting WIU's lead to 2-1. Western Illinois got the run back in the 5th inning on a Botaletto home run.

After St. Thomas scored a run in the bottom of the 5th inning, WIU broke the game open in the top of the 6th inning. With one out, Kyree Alexander would hit his third home run of the season. Nick Mitchell would follow him with a home run, extending his on-base streak to 29 games and WIU lead 5-2. The Leathernecks would load the bases after three walks. Aron Harrington would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in WIU's sixth run of the game. The Leathernecks would not take long to score again as a St. Thomas wild pitch brought in Derek Botaletto, extending WIU's lead to 7-2. J.R. Heavilin extends WIUs lead with a single to right field, bringing in two more runs.

Western Illinois would keep the offensive pressure on in the top of the 7th inning. Nick Mitchell started the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ricky Pospisil and Derek Botaletto both walked to load the bases. Adam Juran drew a walk with the bases loaded, bringing home Mitchell. Aron Harrington would have a two-run single to right field, scoring both Botaletto and Pospisil. J.R. Heavilin would bring the 13th and final WIU run on a sacrifice fly.

Jackson Burk picked up the win in the Leatherneck's victory. Tyler Kapraun would dominate out of the bullpen going 5.2 innings. In the 5.2 innings, Kapruan had five strikeouts allowing just one earned run.

WIU totaled 11 hits as a team, with six extra-base hits. Mitchell, Botaletto, and Juran all had two hits. J.R. Heavilin led the Leathernecks with three RBIs. Aron Harrington and Derek Botaletto both had two RBIs.

Western Illinois and St. Thomas finish their second three-game set tomorrow in St. Paul. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
