WIU, St. Thomas Split Doubleheader

Leathernecks split doubleheader 7-4, 7-9

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois and St. Thomas baseball teams split a doubleheader on Friday (May 12) afternoon. Western Illinois took game one 7-4 before falling 9-7 in game two. 

Game 1

Western Illinois headed into the first game looking for their first series sweep of the year. The Leathernecks won the first two games of the rescheduled three-game series on Tuesday (May 9), 5-2 and 8-2.

WIU got the offense rolling early in game one. Jake Allgeyer singled to left to start the 2nd inning. Chase VanDerGinst followed Allgeyer with a single. Adam Juran would load the bases with the Leathernecks' third single in a row. After back-to-back Leathernecks were retired, Kyree Alexander would single through the infield's left side, bringing home both Allgeyer and VanDerGinst. St. Thomas left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Alexander to move into second base and Juran to score, giving WIU a 3-0 lead.

St. Thomas tied the game at three in the top of the 4th inning before WIU would respond in the bottom half. VanDerGinst started the inning with his second hit of the day, doubling to left field. Juran would advance him to third with a single to left. Steven Walsh drove in VanDerGinst on a ground ball, putting WIU back in front 4-3.

Nick Mitchell would reach first base on a fielder's choice. Ricky Pospisil advanced him 90 feet with a single. A fielder's choice by Derek Botaletto loaded the bases. Allgeyer lined a ball into the outfield for a two-run single, giving WIU the three-run lead 6-3.

St. Thomas cut into the Leathernecks' lead with a run in the top of the 8th inning, but WIU responded with a run in their half-inning. Jack Sievers drew a two-out walk before Kyree Alexander would double to center, bringing Sievers around for his third RBI. The Leathernecks would extend their lead back to 7-4

Jack Bell would pick up his sixth save of the year, pitching the final three innings and grabbing three strikeouts. Caden Kratz picked up his first win, going six innings and allowing just three runs.

The Leathernecks totaled 12 hits in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Kyree Alexander went 3-3 out of the nine-hole with three RBIs. Jake Allgeyer, Chase VanDerGinst, and Adam Juran all knocked two hits. Allgeyer would bring in two RBI. Kyree Alexander would have the lone stolen base in game one.

Game 2

The Leathernecks struck first in game two with two runs in the 2nd inning. Jake Allgeyer would single to lead off the inning and come around to score as J.R. Heavilin would send a ball over the left field fence, giving WIU a 2-0 lead. St. Thomas cut the Leathernecks' lead in half with a run in the bottom of the 2nd.

WIU got the run back in the top of the third. Ricky Pospisil walked with one out and came around to score on a Derek Botaletto double. St. Thomas would cut the lead back to one as they scored in the bottom of the third.

St. Thomas took their first lead of the day as they scored four runs in the 4th inning, taking a 6-3 lead. 

The Leathernecks would chip away at the three-run deficit in the 6th and 7th inning. Adam Juran would hit Western Illinois' second home run of the day, sending it over the left field fence and cutting the deficit to two (6-4). Nick Mitchell continued his on-base streak to 28 games with a leadoff double in the 7th inning. Mitchell would advance to third base on a ground out by Pospisil and come home on a Botaletto double. Derek's second RBI double cut St. Thomas's lead to one (6-5).

Western Illinois would take back control in the 8th inning. Adam Juran led off the inning with a double, tallying his third hit on the afternoon. Juran would advance third on a ground out by Max Slavens. Kyree Alexander brought Juran across home plate with a line drive single to center field, tieing the game at six. Mitchell would walk, allowing Alexander to move up to second base, and Ricky Pospisil would bring him around to score, giving WIU a 7-6 lead.

St. Thomas would respond with three runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, taking a 9-7 lead that would lead them to victory.

Adam Juran led the Leathernecks with three hits. Juran tallied a double, triple, and a home run just a single away from the cycle. Derek Botaletto had two doubles on the day for his two hits as WIU would tally ten hits as a team, seven being extra-base hits.

WIU and St. Thomas continue their six-game stretch together on Saturday (May 13). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
