Leathernek Tennis Falls to Omaha

WIU hosts a pair of home matches next week

MACOMB – The Western Illinois women's tennis team dropped a home match on Friday, falling to Omaha 6-1 in Macomb.

The Leathernecks were able to get their lone win from Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza, who rallied back to claim her match in a third-set tiebreaker. Diniz de Souza dropped her first set, 3-6, then claimed the second, 6-3, setting the stage for the victory. The tiebreaker was tight early, but Diniz de Souza pulled ahead 8-4 and maintained her advantage to close out the match.

Lucky Kancherla also advanced to a third-set tiebreaker, but fell 6-3, 0-6, 4-10. Paige Grice (0-6, 1-6), Lorena Castellanos (3-6, 0-6), Aini Cortina-Pou (1-6, 2-6) and Agatha Carbonell (2-6, 0-6) all fell in singles play.

In doubles, Omaha won the first two matches, with both squads abandoning the third with the doubles point decided. Western Illinois' doubles teams of Kancherla/Cortina-Pou (2-6) and Grice-Castellanos (0-6) each dropped their matches. The team of Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Maria Rybka were tied 4-4 when the match was called.

The Leathernecks fall to 4-12 overall this spring and 0-4 in Summit League play. Western Illinois closes out the regular season next week with a pair of home matches. Western takes on Kansas City at noon next Friday, then ends the homestand with a Sunday 11 a.m. match with St. Thomas.
