Rossetto Diniz de Souza, Carbonell get wins for WIU

Leathernecks fall to Kansas City, 5-2

The Western Illinois women's tennis team put up a strong fight, but fell to the Summit League's second-place team, Kansas City, 5-2 on Friday afternoon in Macomb.

The Leathernecks won a pair of singles matches with Agatha Carbonell and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza each gutting out third-set tiebreakers to give their teams victories.

Carbonell dropped her first set, 4-6, then rallied back to win the second, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Carbonell was able to pick up the win, 10-8.

Rossetto Diniz de Souza also had to put in some extra work. The freshman won her first set, 7-6 (7-3), but dropped the second, 3-6. In the third, she was able to regroup, winning 10-8.

Also in singles, Paige Grice nearly stole a third-set win as well. Grice dropped her first set, 1-6, put stormed back to claim the second, 7-6. In the third, it was back and forth before Grice eventually fell, 11-9.

Also in singles play, Lorena Castellanos (2-6, 1-6), Lucky Kancherla (2-6, 2-6) and Aina Cortina-Pou (1-6, 1-6) fell in straight sets.

Kansas City took two of the three doubles matches to get the doubles point. The Leatherneck duo of Maria Rybka and Rossetto Diniz de Souza fell 1-6 while the pairing of Kancherla and Cortina-Pou lost 0-6. Grice and Castellanos were up 4-3 when the match was abandoned.

The Leathernecks are slated to close out the regular season on Sunday, hosting St. Thomas at 11 a.m. in Macomb.
