WIU Falls at St. Thomas

Leathernecks, Tommies, play series finale on Saturday (April 8).

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Western Illinois softball was in action Friday (April 7), facing the Tommies of St. Thomas in a doubleheader at the South Softball Field in St. Paul, Minn., as the Tommies won both of the Friday contests. Both teams will play once more on Saturday to conclude the series.

Game one: Tommies 8, Leathernecks 0
St. Thomas found its offense early in game one, scoring one run off an RBI single in the first before adding two on another single in the second inning, taking a quick 3-0 advantage. Emily Price then struck out the next two hitters and got a third to fly out before holding the Tommies scoreless in the third.

The Tommy offense once again ignited in the fourth for three more runs, though Western Illinois came just 60 feet from scoring in the fifth inning, when the trio of Abrianna Gracia (single), Bella Alvarez (fielder's choice) and Maria Luna (base on balls) loaded the bases with two outs. Despite the opportunity, WIU was unable to convert and St. Thomas' lead remained at six.

UST would add one run in the fifth and one in the sixth to take an 8-0 victory in game one.

Western Illinois finished with five hits, two of which came off the bat of Gracia, bringing her to 4-5 in her last two games; Drager, Luna and Rylee Boone accounted for the other three hits. In the circle, Emily Price finished with a line of seven hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts while Sophia Honse, who entered in the fourth inning, allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits while striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.

Game two: St. Thomas 4, Western Illinois 0
Kayla Zamora came in at shortstop as the Leathernecks had the same nine-batter lineup to start game two. Bella Alvarez and Rylee Boone both singled in the first two innings while Savannah Rodriguez found a rhythm in the circle, striking out four in the same timeframe – including three-consecutive to wrap up the second inning.

Though the Tommies found three runs in the third inning and another in the fourth, Western Illinois continued to find its way on base. Rylee Boone singled early in the fifth inning before Bella Alvarez and Savannah Rodriguez both singled in the sixth to put a runner in scoring position; the Leathernecks were not able to convert the baserunners into scoring plays and St. Thomas held Western scoreless the rest of the way to claim a 4-0 victory.

Rylee Boone (3-3), Savannah Rodriguez (2-3) and Bella Alvarez (2-3) all had multi-hit games while Rodriguez started and pitched the entire game, finishing with a six innings pitched while allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and striking out six St. Thomas hitters.

The final game of this three-game series is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday (April 8).
