Leatherneck Softball Falls to Tommies

Western Illinois returns to action next weekend, facing South Dakota on the road.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – WIU softball played on Saturday (April 8), falling 6-0 to the St. Thomas Tommies at the South Softball Field in St. Paul, Minn. The Leathernecks return to action next weekend with a road series at South Dakota before hosting Iowa on Wednesday (April 19).

Both teams created chances early as Western put runners on base in three of the first four innings, culminating in arguably the best chance of the game in the fourth after loading the bases. Maria Luna led the inning off with a single, Savannah Rodriguez got on base with a fielder's choice and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from Georgia Rea and Jillian Morris, who entered as a pinch runner, advanced to third off an error by a Tommy infielder. Cynthia Hull walked to load the bases with two down but Western was unable to convert and the game remained scoreless.

The game remained level at zero until the fifth inning, when St. Thomas used back-to-back hits to build a 3-0 advantage. After a double and home run in the sixth, UST held a 6-0 advantage that would hold until the game's conclusion. Luna along with Bella Alvarez (1-2) and Kaylee Ketcherside (1-3) accounted for the team's three hits while Alvarez and Hull both walked twice.

In the circle, Savannah Rodriguez started and pitched five total innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out two. Kathryn McChristy pitched the final inning and struck out one while allowing three hits and three earned runs.

WIU is back in action next weekend, facing the Coyotes of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., with the series set to commence on Saturday (April 15) at 1 p.m.
