WIU Drops Opening Summit League Series

WIU falls in eight innings

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell to Oral Roberts University on Sunday (Apr. 2) afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium. WIU fell behind early as ORU struck for five runs in the first three innings to help ORU prevail with a 13-3 victory.

Oral Roberts jumped out for the third straight game with runs in the bottom of the first inning. Oral Roberts would add to their early 1-0 lead with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Western Illinois would get on the board in the fourth inning. Ricky Pospisil drew a one-out walk to start the half-inning. Chase VanDerGinst would single, putting two runners on base. Kyree Alexander would ground into a fielder's choice making WIU have runners on the corners with two outs. Max Slavens would have the big hit. Slavens would go with an outside pitch and drive it down the third base line. Alexander was off on contact as he came around to score from first, cutting the ORU lead to three (5-2).

Oral Roberts would add two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-2. The Leathernecks would put another run on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. With two outs in the inning, Steven Walsh would get hit by a pitch to reach first base. Derek Botaletto would keep his hitting streak alive as he single to center, advancing Walsh. J.R. Heavilin would drive in the RBI with a single to left field, scoring Walsh. That run would cut the ORU lead to seven (10-3). Oral Roberts would add three more runs over the next two innings forcing the ten-run rule in the eighth inning.

Ricky Pospisil led WIU with getting on base as he reached base three times on three walks. Max Slavens led WIU in extra-base hits and RBIs by collecting a double and two RBIs. J.R. Heavilin also added to his RBI season total. Western Illinois collected five hits as a team and drew four walks.

Western Illinois returns to Alfred D. Boyer for the first time this season as they welcome Illinois State on Wednesday (Apr. 5) and South Dakota State over the weekend.
