WIU Drops Home Opener

WIU falls in extra innings

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team dropped their home opener to South Dakota State on Friday (Apr. 7) afternoon. The Leathernecks and Jackrabbits needed extra innings to help decide the opening game of the three-game set as WIU fell 6-3.

South Dakota State got on the board early at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium as SDSU used a solo home run in the first inning to pull out in front 1-0. WIU would tie the game up at one in the 4th inning. Derek Botaletto would single through the left side of the infield to start the half-inning. Botaletto would be active on the base paths taking second base on a wild pitch. WIU would use station-to-station baseball to bring Botaletto in as Jake Allgeyer's ground ball advanced Botaletto to third, and J.R. Heavilin brought him home.

The Leathernecks would find themselves back down by one heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. Nick Mitchell led the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a Botaletto single. Mitchell would be thrown out at third trying to tag up on an Allgeyer line drive. With Botaletto at first, Heavilin would have a base hit up the middle putting the scoring threat back into play. Ricky Pospisil would come up clutch, sending a bullet into the right-center gap for an RBI single.

The Leathernecks and Jackrabbits would stay deadlocked through the nine innings of play, sending the game to extras. South Dakota State would get the big hit as they knocked in four runs in the top half of the inning. WIU would try to create a comeback in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Mitchell and Botaletto would once again start an inning with back-to-back base hits. Allgeyer would join the hit parade with a single to center bringing Mitchell around to score, cutting the deficit to three. Western Illinois could not scrap across any more runs, falling 6-3 to the South Dakota State.

Derek Botaletto started the homestand with a three-hit performance to lead all Leathernecks. Nick Mitchell and J.R. Heavilin both put together two-hit afternoons.
