WIU falls in Conference Matchup

WIU falls 0-2 in conference play

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team dropped their second Summit League game of the season to Oral Roberts on Saturday (Apr. 1) afternoon. The Golden Eagles struck a run in the bottom of the first and did not look back as WIU fell 7-2 at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

After falling behind 2-0, Western Illinois would get on the scoreboard at the top of the fourth. Jake Allgeyer would lead off the inning with a single to right field on the first pitch he saw. A walk by J.R. Heavilin followed that single. With runners on first and second, Ricky Pospisil would lay down a bunt for an infield single, advancing runners 90 feet and loading the bases. Jack Sievers would drive in WIU's first run with an RBI fielder's choice bringing WIU within one run.

Down 5-1, WIU would threaten again in the sixth inning. Pospisil would have a one-out single to right field. Sievers would reach on an error putting runners on first and second. After a strikeout, Peter Fusek would walk to load the bases. WIU would have the strikeout bug again, as they could not push across any runs.

Derek Botaletto would keep his streak of games with an RBI going in the top of the ninth. The senior from Omaha, NEB, would take a 1-1 pitch and crush it over the right field fence. Botaletto now has had eight RBIs in the last four games. He has also homered in his previous two games.

Four different Leathernecks had base hits this afternoon. Botaletto led the way with three. Allgeyer and Ricky Pospisil both had two, and Fusek had one. WIU had two extra-base hits and walked three times.

Jake Armstrong had another strong outing for WIU. Armstrong went a solid 5.1 innings allowing just three earned runs well, striking out five. Cade Herrmann pitched the other 2.2 innings striking out two well and allowing just two hits.

Western Illinois wraps up its three-game set against Oral Roberts tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
