WIU Unable to Pick Up Win in Series Finale

Slavens, Erbe tally three hits in loss

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Baseball team lost the series finale to SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday (Mar. 5). The Leathernecks jumped out in front early, but SIUE responded every time to pull out the 8-7 victory.

The Leathernecks got the bats rolling early on Sunday afternoon. A single by Max Slavens got the offense going. The next batter, Jake Allgeyer, brought him around with a double to the fence to give WIU the early 1-0 lead. SIUE would respond in the bottom half with two runs to take a 2-1 lead after one.

J.R. Heavilin would make sure WIU wasn't behind for a long. The Western Illinois first baseman would take a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence to tie the ball game at two. Western Illinois would keep its foot on the gas. Kyree Alexander would draw a two-out walk and swipe second base to get himself into scoring position. Slavens would once again find the holes in the defense with a single into left-center to bring Alexander across home plate, and the Leathernecks would be back in front 3-2. SIUE would have an answer as they would strike for two runs in both the second and the third.

WIU would cut back into the three-run deficit as Max Slavens collected his third hit of the day to start the fifth inning. Slavens would advance to second base on an error by the SIUE shortstop on Jake Allgeyer's ground ball. Both Allgeyer and Slavens would move up 90 ft on a wild pitch. Ricky Pospisil would capitalize on both runners moving up as he ground out to third, scoring Slavens. Derek Botaletto would bring Allegeyer around as he would single right back up the middle, making it a 6-5 ball game.

Western Illinois pitching picked up right where the offense left off. Cade Herrmann came into pitch in the bottom of the fifth and threw back-to-back scoreless frames to keep the WIU deficit at one. WIU bats would get back going in the 7th. With two outs and Derek Botaletto at second base Brian Erbe would single to tie the game at six. WIU would take the lead in the eighth as Chase VanDerGinst would ground into an RBI fielder's choice to give WIU the 7-6 lead. SIUE would take the lead back in the bottom of the eighth as they would strike for two runs and lead 8-7. WIU would try to assemble a rally in the ninth as Heavilin would draw a walk that was followed with an Erbe single, but WIU could not bring them around.

Max Slavens and Brian Erbe led WIU with three hits each. Jake Allgeyer and J.R. Heavilin contributed two each. Allgeyer had the lone extra-base hit. The Leathernecks team totaled 12 hits, seven walks, and 12 stolen bases. Jack Bell had another impressive day out of the bullpen, pitching 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
