WIU Softball Drops Two Games at Black and Yellow Challenge

Leathernecks face Bradley and Wichita State tomorrow to conclude the tournament.

WICHITA, Kan. – Western Illinois softball played on Saturday (March 4), falling 8-0 to both Bradley and Wichita State in day one of the 2023 Black & Yellow Challenge. The Leathernecks are back in action tomorrow, facing each team once more.

Game 1: Bradley 8, Western Illinois 0
Both Western Illinois and Bradley were battling early in this one, as the game headed into the fourth inning level at zero. Emily Price, who started in the circle, struck out five in the first three innings but the Brave bats started to heat up with one run in the fourth inning, four in the fifth and three in the seventh. Price would pitch the first fine innings and give up nine hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out six of the 24 batters she faced. Sophia Honse came on in relief for the final two innings and allowed three hits and three runs (no earned) while walking one and striking out one.

The Western Illinois bats were quiet in game one as Maria Luna's first inning single would be the only hit in the game. Luna along with Rylee Boone and Alivia Beard also found their way on base with walks.

Game two: Shockers 8, Leathernecks 0 (F/6)
Wichita State's bats came alive early in the game with five runs in the first two innings and capping it off with home runs in the third and sixth to score eight total. Kathryn McChristy started and struck out one in the first two innings before Honse came on again and struck out two while giving up five hits and three earned runs in 3.1 innings in the circle.

Georgia Rea and Piper Foote found their way on base with hits, putting runners on first and second with no outs in the second inning after back-to-back singles. Those two hits would be the only ones of the game for WIU.
