Western Illinois Drops Final Road Match of Regular Season

Leathernecks end year with three at home

The Western Illinois women's tennis team concluded the road portion of the regular season on Friday, falling on Friday at North Dakota, 7-0. The Leathernecks have their final three regular season contests all scheduled for Macomb over the next two weeks.

The Fighting Hawks took two of three doubles matches, with the third being unfinished, to take a 1-0 lead over Western Illinois (4-11).

In singles, North Dakota took all six matches in straight sets, remaining atop the Summit League standings. Lucky Kancherla nearly rallied to force a third-set tiebreaker, falling in the second set, 7-6 after dropping her opening set.

Also in singles, Paige Grice fell 6-3, 6-2, Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza dropped her match 6-4, 6-2, Lorena Castellanos lost 6-4, 6-1, Aina Cortina-Pou fell 6-1, 6-2 and Agatha Carbonell was defeated 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, the team of Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Maria Rybka lost 6-4, and the duo of Kancherla and Cortina-Pou lost 6-1. The match of Grice and Castellanos was unfinished at 4-4.

The Leathernecks are next at home next Friday, April 7, hosting Omaha at 1 p.m
