Botaletto, Allgeyer Homer in Loss at ORU

Leathernecks knock 11 hits at ORU

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Baseball team drops their Summit League opener on Friday night to Oral Roberts. Strong winds at J.L. Johnson Stadium would help the homerun ball for both teams as they would combine for five home runs on the night. ORU would take advantage of it with three home runs on their way to a 16-5 win in seven innings.

Western Illinois found themselves down early as Oral Roberts would string together six hits in the first inning to go ahead 7-0. ORU would add two more runs extending their lead to 9-0 before WIU would get on the board. Jake Allgeyer was responsible for Western Illinois' first run as he would hit one of Western Illinois's two home runs of the evening to start the fourth inning. The Leathernecks would add another run in the fourth. J.R. Heavilin would get hit by a pitch before Ricky Pospisil would double to center field, sending Heavilin to third. Aron Harrington would follow the double with an RBI ground out, bringing WIU within seven 9-2.

ORU would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth before WIU would strike for three in the top of the fifth. Sammy Contacos would start the inning with a walk. Nick Mitchell would follow it up with a double, moving Contacos to third. Derek Botaletto would then send a ball over the left-center fence for a three-run home run. Botaletto's first home run of the season would bring WIU to cut the deficit to five 10-5. ORU would score six runs in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to 11, forcing the run rule in after the top of the seventh.

Western Illinois had other chances in the ball game. In the second and sixth inning, the Leathernecks would load the bases before an inning-ending double play would wipe away a scoring threat.

Eric Cunning made the first start of his career, getting a strikeout to start the ball game. The Leathernecks used four pitchers out of the bullpen. Cam Howard pitched 3.2 innings allowing five hits, well striking out three.

Western Illinois hitters tallied 11 hits on the night. Hitters one through five in the Western Illinois lineup contributed to ten of the 11 hits. Nick Mitchell and Ricky Pospisil had doubles, with Derek Botaletto and Jake Allgeyer having a homerun. Botaletto had his second consecutive game with three RBI.
