Leathernecks Fall at USD

Western Illinois next at UND

The Western Illinois women's tennis team fell at South Dakota on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the Summit League match 5-2. Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Agatha Carbonell led the Leathernecks, each winning their singles matches via a third-set tiebreaker.

Rossetta Diniz de Souza dropped her first set 7-6 (7-3), but rallied back, taking the second, 6-2. In the third, Rossetto Diniz de Souza trailed 4-6 but won five-straight points, pulling ahead 9-6. Her opponent tied the match 9-9, but Rossetto Diniz de Souza claimed two-straight points to get the win.

Carbonell won her first set 6-3, but dropped the second, 1-6. In the third and decisive set, Carbonell took a quick 5-1 lead. The advantage grew to 9-2 before the Leatherneck closed the door on her foe, winning 10-5.

South Dakota took two of three doubles matches to claim the single point. Western Illinois' lone win in doubles came from the team of Paige Grice and Lorena Castellanos, who won 6-4. Castellanos and Grice trailed 3-4, but won the match with three-straight sets, winning 6-4.

Western Illinois heads north for its next match, taking on North Dakota on Friday at 4 p.m. After the meeting with North Dakota, the Leathernecks are scheduled to be at home next Friday, taking on Omaha at 1 p.m.
