MACOMB, Ill – After nine days off Western Illinois baseball team was back in action traveling to Curtis Granderson Stadium to take on the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. UIC used a four-run first inning to hold control as they would take the midweek in-state battle 10-6.

Western Illinois fell behind early as UIC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. The flames used two home runs and back-to-back doubles to pull them out in front. Western Illinois got the offense rolling in the top of the third inning. Max Slavens would start the inning with a single to the right-center gap. The Leathernecks would use small ball after the single. Justin Jang would lay a bunt down the third base line for a base hit. UIC would overthrow the first baseman, allowing Slavens and Jang to advance 90 feet. With runners on second and third, Nick Mitchell would draw a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Derek Botaletto. Botaletto would take a pitch and drive it down the third base line clearing the bases and cutting the deficit to one.

Down 10-3, Western Illinois would threaten in the eighth inning. J.R. Heavilin would lead off the inning with his third hit of the evening. Heavilin would be active on the base paths stealing second base and putting himself in scoring position. Sammy Contacos would follow the stolen base with an RBI double off the top of the left-field fence. Kyree Alexander would single to left to put runners on the corners. Slavens would walk to load the bases for Jack Sievers. Sievers would drive in Contacos with a sac fly to the right bringing the WIU deficit to five. Mitchell would drive in another run with an RBI single to left field, bringing the score to 10-6.
