Leathernecks head to Oklahoma for pair of matches

The Western Illinois women's tennis team continue their road trip with a visit to Oklahoma this week for a pair of matches. On Wednesday, the Leathernecks meet Northeastern State University (4-3) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at 2 p.m. It is the first-ever match between the two programs. On Saturday, Western Illinois opens Summit League play, taking on Oral Roberts (2-9) in Tulsa. WIU is 1-13 all-time vs. the Golden Eagles.

Western Illinois is coming off one of its best performances of the winter/spring season, topping Lindenwood 7-0 on Monday. The victory saw the program improve to 5-7 overall, the most wins in a single season since the 2017-18 campaign. The victory was also the first Western Illinois win for new coach Meredith Witherell.

The Leathernecks took two of three doubles matches against Lindenwood before sweeping the singles matches. Paige Grice, Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza, Agatha Carbonell, Aina Cortina-Pou, Lucky Kancherla and Maria Rybka all picked up wins in singles play.

After the Oklahoma trip, the Leathernecks return to Illinois with a match next Tuesday at Quincy University. Western Illinois is scheduled for its first home match in Macomb next Saturday (March 25), taking on Denver at noon.
