Western tennis collects win at Lindenwood

Most single-season wins for program since 2017-18

Box Score O'FALLON, Illinois -- The Western Illinois women's tennis team improved to 5-7 this season, earning coach Meredith Witherell her first victory as head coach of the program with the 7-0 victory over Lindenwood on Monday afternoon.

The Leathernecks took two of three doubles matches, then swept past the Lions in singles play to give the team the most wins in a single season since the 2017-18 campaign.

The doubles team of Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Maria Rybka started the Leathernecks with a 6-1 victory. The duo of Lucky Kancherla and Aina Cortina-Pou gave WIU the doubles point, winning by default.

In singles play, it was all Leathernecks as Western Illinois did not drop a set to Lindenwood in the six matches.

At No. 1 singles, Paige Grice scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At No. 2 singles, Rossetto Diniz de Souza capped her unbeaten day, scoring the 6-2, 6-3 victory. At No. 3, Agatha Carbonell kept WIU rolling with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Western Illinois stayed strong in the back half of singles as well as No. 4 player Cortina-Pou also went 2-0 on the day, winning her match, 6-4, 6-3. Kancherla also made short work of her foe, winning 6-2, 6-1. Rybka won the No. 6 spot with a default win.

Western Illinois is next in action on Wednesday, taking on Northeastern State of Oklahoma. The Leathernecks open Summit League play on Saturday, visiting Oral Roberts.
