Women's tennis cruises to win

Leathernecks top Southern Indiana, 6-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Western Illinois women went on the road and scored a 6-1 victory over Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon. The Leathernecks improve to 2-1 in the winter/spring season and are next in action on Saturday, visiting Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
 
Doubles had a strong start to the day and set the tone for Western Illinois as the Leathernecks took two of three matches to go up 1-0.
 
The team of Paige Grice and Lorena Castellanos wasted little time recording WIU's first win, scoring a 6-2 victory in 29 minutes. The duo of Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla gave the Leathernecks the doubles point, winning their match 7-6.
 
In singles, Agatha Carbonell started Western Illinois off on the right foot, winning her No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2. Carbonell was efficient, winning in 55 minutes. Grice extended Western Illinois' lead to 3-0, finishing with another win. Grice took home the No. 1 singles victory, winning 6-3, 6-2.
 
Cortina-Pou also finished the day unbeaten, locking up the Western Illinois victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
 
Kancherla would extend Western Illinois's lead to 5-1 thanks to a 6-1, 7-6 victory and Lara Rossetto Diniz De Souza would cap the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
