Leathernecks look for first-ever win vs. Huskies

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois women's tennis team heads north to take on in-state rival Northern Illinois on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The contest is the lone dual of the week for the Leathernecks, who are coming off a split last weekend.

A week ago, the Leathernecks fell to Dayton 7-0 on Saturday, but rallied back on Sunday, topping Ashland 6-1.

Paige Grice, Lara Diniz de Souza, Agatha Carbonell, Maria Rybka and Lucky Kancherla all claimed singles victories for the Leathernecks.

The doubles teams of Grice and Carbonell and Ainia Cortina-Pou and Kancherla also picked up victories.

The victory gave WIU four wins between the fall, winter and spring seasons, the most for the program since the 2018-19 season.

Next for the Leathernecks is a match with the Huskies. Northern Illinois is 4-6 overall this season. Western Illinois has never defeated Northern Illinois in tennis, holding a 0-10 record. NIU won last year's meet in DeKalb, 7-0. The match will be played at the Chick Evans Field House.
