Leathernecks Drop Final Regular Season Match

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois volleyball fell in their regular season finale in five sets to Eastern Illinois. The Leathernecks end the regular season with an 8-10 OVC record.

Set 1
Back-and-forth action started the first set as Brittany Wulf tied the first set at four with a kill. The Leathernecks would keep on the offensive pressure with an early 4-0 run, pulling in front 7-4. EIU responded with a 4-0 run of their own, giving themselves an 8-7 lead. One point separated both teams for the following three points before EIU gained separation with a 4-1 run heading into the halfway point. Grace Kremer brought WIU within two with a kill at 15-13, and a service ace by Kaitlyn Wickersheim got the Leathernecks within one 16-15. Eastern Illinois, however, finished the set on a 9-3 run, taking set one 25-18.

Set 2
The first five points of set two were traded as both teams fought for separation early on. Western Illinois found that separation as Keyana Cruse got a kill to spark a 3-0 run, putting WIU ahead 8-5. EIU chipped away and tied the set at eight. WIU, however, has a response. A 5-1 run by the Leathernecks put them up 13-9 and in complete control midway through the set. Cruse held the Leathernecks lead at three with a kill at 18-15. EIU again showed why they are atop the conference as they tied the set at 18 on a 3-0 run. The Leathernecks and Panthers stayed tied as the set was all knotted up at 22. WIU got helped by EIU with two errors by the Panthers and then went to Grace Nichols for the set winner as WIU took two 25-23.

Set 3
WIU started on the front foot with an opening 3-1 run. The set would stay close as both teams would find them separated by less than two points until WIU saw an attack error by EIU at the 17-14 mark. The Leathernecks returned to Cruse with the score 17-15 to extend their lead back out three. WIU and EIU did what they had done in both sets and went back and forth with points as WIU used an Elizabeth Ziegler kill, pulling ahead 21-17. Wulf took it the rest of the way for WIU as she would have two kills and a service ace, helping WIU take the set 25-21.

Set 4
WIU used the momentum from the third set in the first five points of set four as they started on a 5-0 run. EIU responded with a 6-0 run to pull in front. All squared up at 11, Eastern Illinois used another run midway through for a 14-11 advantage. WIU mounted a comeback as Ziegler brought WIU within one at 15-14. A 10-5 run by EIU is how set four ended, as they took the fourth set 25-19.

Set 5
Separation was not found at the beginning of set five. Trailing 7-5, WIU returned to Nichols for the kill, bringing them within one a 7-6. The Leathernecks used an EIU attack error to even the score at seven. The Panthers pulled back in front before Maggie Craker would go over on two and pick up a kill, tying the set at eight. EIU used another late run, pulling in front and taking the final set 15-10.

Keyana Cruse led the Leathernecks with 17 kills. She also had 21 digs to clinch her double-double. Brittany Wulf also picked up double-digit kills with 11. Maggie Craker dished out 39 assists and picked up 12 digs, giving herself the double-double. WIU out-blocked EIU for the second straight night, 10-5. Kaityln Wickersheim and Brittany Wulf contributed to eight of the nine Western Illinois service aces at night.
