WIU Falls in Quarterfinals of OVC Tournament

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois Volleyball team fell in the quarterfinals of the OVC tournament on Monday night. The Leathernecks battled the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State to five sets before losing.

Set 1
Western Illinois came out with some energy to start setting one up. An attack error by SEMO, followed by Julianna Schmidt, gave WIU an early 2-0 lead. Teams would battle back and forth as the Leathernecks would hold a 9-7 advantage after another Schmidt kill. Kills by Maggie Craker and Brittany Wulf kept WIU ahead by two halfway through the set. SEMO would tie the set at 16 out of the media timeout, but a Schmidt kill followed by an attack error and a Keyana Cruse kill put WIU back in control 19-16. SEMO responded with a 3-0 run, tying the setback at 19. Teams would trade points until SEMO took a 23-22 lead. Down by one, Craker found Wulf for a kill. The Leathernecks would then head back to Schmidt, then to Wulf again, taking set one 25-23.

Set 2
Separation was nowhere to be found in the first ten points of set two. Six-ties through the first ten points saw SEMO take a 10-7 lead. Grace Kremer cut the deficit to two at 11-9. SEMO would go on a 9-1 run to gain full control of the second set at 23-13. Down 23-13, WIU would mount a little run to end the set. Two errors by SEMO were followed by two kills by Cruse to put WIU only down by six, 23-17. Western would tally on two more points before SEMO took set two 25-19.

Set 3
Leathernecks used the momentum from set two into the start, opening a 3-1 lead after a Cruse kill. The Leathernecks returned to Cruse twice more to extend the lead to 5-3. The Leathernecks held the three-point advantage through the middle phase due to the help of back-to-back blocks by Grace Nichols and Craker. Brittany Wulf gave WIU their largest lead at five with a service ace. SEMO hung around, but WIU always had an answer as the Leathernecks would find Keyana Cruse one final time to take the set 25-23.

Set 4
SEMO came out hot in set four. An early 5-0 gave the Redhawks the early jump. The Leathernecks responded with a 5-1 run, pulling the deficit to one 6-5. SEMO responded with a 3-0 run, holding a four-point lead at 13-9. Down by four, three straight kills by Cruse brought WIU within one, forcing an SEMO timeout. The Redhawks responded with a 6-0 out of the break to regain control 19-12. The Leathernecks cut the deficit to five multiple times, but the Redhawks finished setting four ahead 25-19.

Set 5
Both teams stayed knotted up through the first three points of the final set. SEMO used a 4-0 run halfway through, pulling in front 8-3. After switching sides, the Leathernecks got going. Kills by Wulf and Ziegler helped bring WIU within two at 8-6. However, the Redhawks would respond, stretching their lead back out to four and eventually five to take the final set 15-10.

Keyana Cruse finished the season with another double-double on 24 kills and 19 digs. Brittany Wulf also contributed a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Elizabeth Ziegler had double-digit kills with ten. Karli Wenzel was the team leader in digs with 20, and Maggie Craker had 52 assists.
