Leathernecks Top Tommies in Five Goal Thriller

Western picked up its first Summit League win on Saturday when St. Thomas traveled to Macomb

MACOMB, IL -- The Leathernecks got the big Summit League win they were looking for on Saturday in a match with St. Thomas. The match ended with a score of 3-2 in favor of Western in a gritty match that saw six cautions and eighteen total fouls.

Western started off attacking early, as the men in purple would send four, five, or six men on the attack. It worked out early on though, as Liam Gainey, who had missed four matches this season due to injury, put in a goal to give the Leathernecks a lead inside eleven minutes. Not one minute had passed before the Leathernecks' relentless attack overpowered the Tommies again, as this time Armin Dedic barreled toward goal and slotted one in to make it 2-0. The goals marked the first time that either Gainey or Dedic had scored on the year. Arber Shala and Caleb Ragland picked up assists on the goals, respectively.

The Leathernecks grabbed a third goal in the 25th minute thanks to a beautiful ball from Joel McIntyre, and finish from freshman Aidan Breslin. The three goals by the team marked a season-high for the 'Necks.

In the second half, the Tommies kept a lot of pressure on the Leathernecks, as they eventually scored in the 62nd minute thanks to an own goal. The Tommies would once again score in the 80th to draw within one.

St. Thomas would have their fair share of chances in the final ten, but weren't able to put it away to secure the equalizer. Western picks up their first win in Summit League play and improves to 1-2 on the season in conference play.

Looking ahead, Western will continue their current 3-match homestand on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup with IUPUI.
