Leathernecks Get On Board First, Fall To IUPUI

Western lost 1-2 in the Leathenecks' last non-conference matchup of the season vs. IUPUI

MACOMB -- Western geared up for their last non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon, against a familiar foe in IUPUI. Tuesday's match marked the 27th time the squads have played each other, dating back to 1998. IUPUI entered the match ranked first in the Horizon League, while Western's three Summit League points have them ranked fourth in the conference.

The Leathernecks were the first team on the board, as the team's shot leader on the season, Kyle Owen, finally scored his first goal of the season after thirteen minutes of play in the match. Owen pounded in a header off of a beautiful cross from Jack Immesoete, who picked up his first goal contribution of the season. Immesoete and Owen have both been Leathernecks since 2019.

IUPUI would get on the board in the 26th minute, scoring the equalizer after having an open net from a prior chance. It was one of only a pair of mistakes from Leatherneck keeper Youssou Ouendeno, who would make an incredible save at the end of the half to ensure Western would go into the half even with the Jaguars. Ouendeno ended up with nine saves in the match.

Western would have a few chances early on in the second half to take the lead, but it was the Jaguars who would find the back of the net. A long ball off of a Jaguars corner kick found a IUPUI player at the back post, who slotted away the eventual game winner. Western would have a few chances late in the match, including a 90th minute free kick, but were a bit unlucky in their attempts, as IUPUI put away the game by a final score of 2-1.

Next up for the Leathernecks is a Saturday Summit League clash at home against first-place Denver.
