Cruse Finishes with Double Double Against Tennessee Tech

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell inside Western Hall to the visiting Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech on Friday (10/27) afternoon. The Western Illinois moves to 6-6 in Ohio Valley play.

SET 1
Western Illinois found success early in set one. An Annika Black kills sparked an opening 3-1 running, putting WIU ahead early. Kennedy Bauer kept WIU ahead by two as she found her first kill early in set one. The Leathernecks would see their lead slip away, but a pair of kills by Bauer saw the set tied at ten and 11. WIU jumped back in front at the media timeout on a 3-0 run. Keyana Cruse would have a kill sparking the Leatherneck run. Jousting for control late in the first set, WIU used a pair of service aces from a Cruse and a Grace Kremer kill to hold their largest lead at four, 21-17. TTU responded with a 5-0 run late, pulling ahead 22-21. The Leathernecks tied the set at 22,2 3, 24, and 25 before two kills by TTU pulled them ahead 27-25 for the set victory.

SET 2
Tennessee Tech took control early in set two with a 7-3 opening run. The Leathernecks used a kill by Cruse and a service ace by Maggie Craker to pull within one (9-8). TTU took back control in the middle of the set with a 6-1 run to lead 15-9 at the media timeout. WIU trimmed the deficit back to five on a kill by Cruse and a Tennessee Tech attack error at 21-16. The Golden Eagles would roll the rest of the way to a 25-17 set win.

SET 3
WIU got the offense rolling early in set three. Down 2-1, a 4-0 Leatherneck run gave them a 5-2 lead. WIU saw the Golden Eagles inch closer with a 3-0 run, but Brittany Wulf ended that with a cross-court shot, putting WIU up 10-7. WIU would push their lead back out to five as Julianna Schmidt teamed up with Craker for a block. The Leathernecks would coast through the middle portion of set three, extending their lead to seven of a kill by Schmidt. Another kill by Schmidt and one by Grace Ulatowski put the finishing touches on a 25-19 set win for the Leathernecks.

SET 4
Set four saw WIU keep their momentum rolling early. A 4-0 Leatherneck run broke an early 3-3 tie between the teams. TTU clawed back in the middle portions. A 7-1 run by the Golden Eagles saw them ahead 14-10, forcing WIU to use a timeout. Wulf and Black would both have kills to bring WIU within one. WIU would cut the deficit to one at 22-21 before TTU would finish the match on a 3-0 run, taking set four 25-21.

Keyana Cruse led the way for the offense once again. The Bonner Springs native had 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. Julianna Schmidt and Annika Black both registered double-digit kills with ten. Karli Wenzel led the dig category with 17. Maggie Craker dished out 48 assists. WIU out-blocked the Golden Eagles eight to five.
