Leathernecks Fall on Thursday Night

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois Volleyball fell inside Western Hall to Tennessee Tech on Thursday night. The Leathernecks battled but dropped the match in four sets. WIU moves to 6-5 in conference play.

SET 1
WIU started on the right foot as they saw a TTU service error and a Keyana Cruse kill to give them an early 2-0 lead. Maggie Craker doubled WIU with the Leathernecks ahead 4-1. Tennessee Tech cut the Leatherneck lead to two before Brittany Wulf would power a kill, extending WIU's lead to three (8-5). TTU pulled ahead early with a 6-0 run before Kennedy Bauer ended the run with a kill. Down 23-16 late in the first set, Julianna Schmidt would spark a Leatherneck 4-0 run. WIU would get within three at 24-21 before TTU took the first set 25-21

SET 2
WIU fell behind early, 7-5 in set two. The deficit would not last long as Grace Kremer and Wulf went back-to-back with a kill, tying the set at seven. The match stayed dead-locked through the middle of the set as the teams traded points with the set two at 13. WIU would see their first lead of the set as Cruse went back-to-back, giving WIU a 15-13 lead. Cruse again doubled the Leathernecks' lead with two kills at 18-14. WIU kept increasing their lead throughout the end of the set as WIU took the second set 25-18.

SET 3
The Leathernecks kept the momentum rolling early in set three as they started on a 4-1 run after a Schmidt kill. WIU saw their lead slip away in the middle of set three as TTU would go on a 5-0 run, pulling ahead 10-9. TTU extended their lead farther with a 5-1 run as TTU pulled ahead 17-12. WIU had a late burst with a 3-0 run with a Cruse kill and two Tennessee Tech attack errors, cutting the Golden Eagles lead 22-20. Both teams traded points as TTU took the third set 25-22.

SET 4
Set four started a lot like one and three. WIU jumped to an early 7-3 lead before TTU chipped away, tying the set at ten. Teams traded points 11 and 12 before WIU jumped back in front by two on back-to-back kills by Schmidt. The Leathernecks kept their two-point advantage heading into the back end of the fourth set. TTU put in a late run, pulling ahead 19-18 before Kennedy Adair would have a kill, tying the set at 19. Adair would have another kill to tie the set at 20, and Kaitlyn Wickersheim had two straight service aces, pulling WIU in front 22-20. That would be the last lead WIU saw as TTU ended the set on a 5-0 run, taking the fall set 25-22.


Keyana Cruse had 14 kills to lead the Leathernecks to go along with her 21 digs. Kennedy Bauer and Julianna Schmidt both had double-digit kills with 13 and 10. Karli Wenzel and Maggie Craker both had double-digit digs with 15 and 12. Craker also dished out 42 assists on the night. WIU had seven service aces and five total blocks.
