Leathernecks Pick Up Third OVC Point On Road

Western played UT-Martin to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon

MARTIN, TN -- Western picked up its third point of the OVC season on Sunday with a draw at UT-Martin. The Leathernecks scored and conceded their first goals of conference play in the match, as both previous matches were played to 0-0 draws.

UT-Martin started off the match hot, picking up three corner kicks inside five minutes, as they poured each one directly into the box. The Skyhawks were unable to convert on any of the corner kicks, as the Leathernecks blocked a shot in the sixth minute to keep the match scoreless. Western would block five UTM shots in the first half, and eleven total in the match, as the squad in purple dominated defensively, a running theme for the Leathernecks in 2023.

In the final minute of the first half, senior Maddie Hasken lobbed in an excellent ball to Kayla Turner, who turned and fired a shot on goal that was tipped by the Skyhawk keeper, but ended up bouncing up and behind her and into the net as the Leathernecks got on the board first. Turner, a junior from Owings, Maryland, scored her first goal for the Leathernecks since 2021. Western would take the 1-0 lead into the break.

UT-Martin came out on the attack in the second half, and were relentless to get the equalizer, but Leatherneck keeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez stopped the first four Skyhawk shots on goal in the second period. UT-Martin would finally get on the board in the 75th minute, scoring a goal that brought the Skyhawks level.

1-1 would be the final score, as the Leathernecks have picked up three draws in all three matches played in the conference season. UTM now stands at 0-1-2 on the year in OVC play.

Looking at the week ahead, Western Illinois will host Southern Indiana on Thursday, before traveling to Tennessee Tech on Sunday.
