Leathernecks take on IUPUI, Western Kentucky

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois women's tennis team begins the winter/spring schedule this week with a pair of matches. On Friday, the Leathernecks take on IUPUI in Indianapolis, then on Sunday Western Illinois heads to Western Kentucky. The match at IUPUI is slated for noon while the match with the Hilltoppers is slated for 4 p.m.

IUPUI has played one match this winter, falling to Ball State 7-0. Western Kentucky has been busy in the new year, already playing four matches. WKU topped Bellarmine 4-3, fell to UT Chattanooga 5-2, then topped Eastern Kentucky 7-0 and Lipscomb 5-2. Western Kentucky also plays Austin Peay and Western Carolina before matching up with the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois is led by Paige Grice, who was named Summit League Preseason Athlete to Watch. Grice led the team with six singles victories last season.

The Leathernecks feature plenty of experience as their top six from last spring all return. Agatha Carbonell, Lorena Castellanos, Aina Cortina-Pou, Lucky Kancherla, Maria Rybka and Grice provide the experience while newcomer Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza adds depth to the roster.

After the two matches this weekend, Western Illinois remains on the road, visiting Southern Indiana next Friday and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville next Saturday.
