Leathernecks Drop Summit League Opener

WIU held scoreless despite out-scoring Omaha.

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck men's soccer played on Saturday (Sept. 24), hosting the Omaha Mavericks in a game played at the Northwest Field in a game that saw the visitors leave as 2-0 victors. Western is back in action next weekend, hosting Kansas City on Saturday (Oct. 1).
 
Liam Gainey started his second-straight contest as Muzu Sagir returned to the starting 11 for a Leatherneck team that would feature 15 different players in the match. Kyle Owen, Sofian Maghouz, Xavier Brown and Arian Mehrang all recorded multiple shots, with Brown, Gainey, Mehrang and Jaylen Drummond putting shots on goal; the Leathernecks out-shot Omaha 12-11 in the game.
 
Western created chances early, with shots by Xavier Brown and Liam Gainey forcing saves from the Omaha goalkeeper in the 11th and 18th minutes; Omaha would take a lead in the 15th minute on a shot from outside the box and the Mavs took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Mehrang's equalizing attempt to the top left corner was saved 11 minutes into the second period and Omaha doubled the lead 20 minutes later.
 
Western Illinois took seven corner kicks to Omaha's five, while also drawing 15 fouls and committing just eight. Alex Flowers made two saves in net for WIU while maintaining his position atop the Summit League statistical rankings for save percentage (.733) and keeping his goals against average (1.5) at second-best.
 
The Leathernecks are back in action next Saturday (Oct. 1), hosting the Roos of Kansas City at John MacKenzie Alumni field.
