Leathernecks Fall to Redbirds

Amy Andrews scored, Leathernecks face Eastern Illinois next Friday (Sept. 16).

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer was in action on Sunday (Sept. 11), falling 2-1 to the Redbirds of Illinois State. Amy Andrews scored her fourth goal of the 2022 season as WIU prepares to face Eastern Illinois on Friday (Sept. 16).

Andrews opened the game's scoring in the 34th minute. After receiving a ball near midfield, she cut through the ISU defense and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and made no mistake with the finish, firing the Leathernecks into the lead. Sunday's goal was the 30th in her Leatherneck career, as she continues to take hold of a program record that she set last season. Andrews' goal was the only score of the first period of play.

The Leathernecks had several close opportunities in the second half, forcing key saves from the Illinois State goalkeeper. Andrews (74'), Bailey Burlingham (77') and Andrews again (79') almost turned the tables, but Western was unable to score; Illinois State scored in the 78th and 87th minutes to take a 2-1 advantage that would be the game's final score.

Andrews led all players with eight shots (four on goal), and combined with Sydnee Sagal, Leah Ahlers and Bailey Burlingham for 11 total shots (five on goal). Western Illinois drew eight fouls and took one corner kick as 16 different players featured in the game. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made 10 saves in goal, nearly tying her career-best mark of 12 that was set last season.

The Leathernecks are back in action this Friday (Sept. 16), heading across the state to face Eastern Illinois. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
