Leatherneck Bats Struggle Against SDSU

The teams will play once tomorrow in a game that was pushed back by one hour.

Brookings, S.D. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Saturday (April 4), dropping both games in a doubleheader against the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. The series has one game remaining scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday (April 10).

Game one: Leathernecks 0 – 8 Jackrabbits
Abby Carlin started in the circle for Western Illinois and started the game off hot with four strikeouts in the first three innings, but the Jackrabbit bats got going late in the game. SDSU scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth with four total home runs, as Carlin went the distance and allowed six hits and eight runs (five earned), while striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work.

Four Leatherneck hitters combined for five hits, led by Savannah Rodriguez's 2-3 day that included a sixth-inning double to center. Ami Ill continued her strong season from the plate with a 1-3 performance, while Jorja Hudson and Torince Muczynski also recorded hits. Georgia Rea got on base with a first-inning walk.

Game two: Western Illinois 0 – 10 South Dakota State
Maddy Anderson started in the circle for Western and went 1.2 innings as South Dakota State's offense poured over from game one. The Jackrabbits scored 10 runs in the first two innings, before Emily Price came in and held them to two hits and no runs through 2.1 innings of work. Western's offense struggled to put runners on in game two, with walks by Ami Ill, Georgia Rea and Savannah Rodriguez accounting for the three Leatherneck base runners in that second matchup.

Western Illinois and South Dakota State will finish the series with one game tomorrow. Originally scheduled for 11 a.m., it will now start at 12 p.m. due to weather-related concerns.
