Western Illinois announces football schedule

Leathernecks with five home games

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois football program released its schedule for the 2022 season on Monday (April 4).
Along with the always difficult eight-game Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule, the Leathernecks are challenging themselves outside league play with a strong three-game nonconference slate.
"We are very excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity in front of us for 2022," Western Illinois football coach Myers Hendrickson said. "It is an honor to compete against the best in the nation in Division 1 FCS football as well as the opportunity we have against a great Big 10 opponent. It is an exciting time for our program."
Western Illinois opens the season on Thursday, September 1, visiting defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Tennessee-Martin. The Leathernecks and Skyhawks have met once before with WIU winning 56-0 on September 20, 2003.
The Leathernecks remain on the road the following Saturday, heading to Minneapolis to take on FBS and Big Ten foe Minnesota (Sept. 10).
WIU fell in its only meeting vs. the Golden Gophers 29-12 on Sept. 14, 2013.
The Leathernecks return to Macomb for the home opener on September 17, hosting Southern Utah out of the Big Sky Conference. WIU is 4-0 in its history vs. Southern Utah, with the most recent victory a 38-28 win on November 16, 2002.
Western Illinois begins the MVFC schedule the next weekend, hosting Northern Iowa (Sept. 24), before returning the road to take on South Dakota State (Oct. 1)
The Leathernecks then have a week off for their scheduled bye before going back on the road to face Southern Illinois (Oct. 15)
Western Illinois is back at Hanson Field the following weekend, hosting Youngstown State (Oct. 22) before going on the road to Missouri State (Oct. 29) the next weekend.
The Leathernecks close out the home portion of the regular season schedule with back-to-back home games.
Western Illinois plays host to defending FCS champion North Dakota State on November 5, then ends the home slate vs. Indiana State on November 12.
The Leathernecks close out the regular season at in-state rival Illinois State on November 19.
