WIU Drops First Games of NDSU Series

Teams play again at 11 a.m. tomorrow (April 16).

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Friday (April 15), dropping a pair of conference games to the Bison of North Dakota State in a neutral site matchup played in Omaha, Neb. Originally scheduled to be played in Fargo, N.D., the series was relocated due to forecasted weather in Fargo.

Game one: WIU 0 – 7 NDSU
Abby Carlin got the start in the circle for Western Illinois, pitching five innings and striking out four while allowing 11 hits and five runs (five earned). Carlin held NDSU scoreless in three of the five innings that she pitched before being replaced by Emily Price, who threw one inning while allowing three hits and two runs.

Jorja Hudson led the team's offense with two hits, doubling to left center in the fifth inning and singling down the right field line in the top of the seventh. With the performance, Hudson now has four multi-hit games this season and improves her season average to .246. Ami Ill, Kaylee Ketcherside and Bella Alvarez also recorded hits in the game, with Abrianna Gracia getting on base with a fourth-inning walk.

Game two: Leathernecks 1 – 12 Bison
Western Illinois took a 1-0 lead early in the game, with Abrianna Gracia singling through the left side of the infield and advancing to second as Torince Muczynski scored from second base after walking earlier in the inning. Savannah Rodriguez, Jorja Hudson and Bella Alvarez also added hits in the game, with Alvarez's double being her second of the doubleheader and fourth on the season.

Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle for game two and came out dealing, striking out two Bison in the first inning and adding another in the second. The NDSU bats started rolling in the third inning, however, as they scored three runs in the third and nine in the fourth. Maddy Anderson came on to pitch in the middle of the fourth and pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and four runs.

The Leathernecks and Bison conclude the series with one final game on Saturday (April 16). First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
