Men’s Golf Places Fourth In Benbow Collegiate

| By:

Wyatt Spier and Cameron Karney led the way with both athletes placing t-15th individually.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FLA.- Western Illinois men's golf competed in its fourth tournament of the spring season and placed fourth in the 2022 Benbow Collegiate, hosted by Butler University. The Leathernecks ended the two-round event with a score of +46 over par (614). Full results can be found here.

"Overall, our ball striking was pretty good, but the Bermuda green speed was the hiccup," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Cam and Wyatt finished top 15 and left some putts out there. We can build on that during our week and a half before Missouri State."

Wyatt Spier and Cameron Karney both produced throughout the invitational, as the duo ended with a score of +8 over par (150) to place t-15th. Spier bounced back from a difficult first round to shoot par on 15 of 18 holes in round two to score +3.

Karney shot a +3 in round one with a birdie and had a great front nine in round two. He shot even in the first nine holes with three birdies, but a triple bogey in the back nine bumped his score up to +5 in round two.

Dylan Cervantes was also a huge bright spot for WIU, placing t-21st with a score +13 over par (155). Cervantes was WIU's individual in the tournament and ended on a great note. The Moline, Ill., native scored a +2 in the back nine of the second round with a birdie.

Men's golf will enjoy a break before competing in the Twin Oak Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo., hosted by Missouri State University March 21-22.
