Leathernecks Fall in Sunday Showdown

| By:

Savannah Rodriguez struck out seven, Leathernecks look to Saturday matchup with North Dakota.

Box Score MACOMB, Ill.  – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Sunday (March 27), falling 5-1 to the Tommies of St. Thomas. Western Illinois moves to 1-2 against Summit League opposition and will turn the focus to next weekend's home series against North Dakota.

"We fell short," head coach Alisa Goler said. "I think there were a few bright spots but at the end of the day we lost the series. (Savannah Rodriguez) threw well, the score board showed five runs but she was one pitch away from a 0-0 game. The difference was that they once again got a big hit when we didn't, but we cleaned up our defense which was great."

Rodriguez got her fifth start of the season in the circle for Western Illinois, going 5.2 innings while allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) and striking out seven. Rodriguez was close to getting out of innings unscathed on multiple occasions, as all five of the Tommy runs came with two outs. Abby Carlin added 1.1 innings to finish the game, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Western's offense was active throughout the game with seven hits, but it took until the seventh inning before anyone scored. A Jorja Hudson single was followed by a Kayla Zamora walk and Torince Muczynski single to right center, and Ami Ill came up big in the ensuing at-bat with a drive up the middle of the infield to score a Western runner. Ill finished with two hits, bringing her team-leading batting average to .315, while Muczynski's hit was her fifth in the last four games – a stretch that has seen her go 5-9 (.556).

"Ami had another good day and Tori had a good weekend overall. I think she flew under the radar but did what she had to and found herself on base a couple times. Bella played another good game at third; I know we just moved her over there again the other day."

Western Illinois is back in action next Saturday (April 2), hosting North Dakota in a Summit League doubleheader. Games are scheduled to begin play at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
