Leathernecks Fall in Doubleheader

WIU plays one more on the road before coming home for Summit League opener.

LOUIS, Mo. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played Saturday (March 19), dropping both games in a doubleheader matchup with the Saint Louis Billikins. The Leathernecks have one more road game on Wednesday (March 23) before playing their home opener.
 
Game one: Western Illinois 1 – 4 Saint Louis
The Leathernecks recorded three hits and one run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Georgia Rea doubled in the fifth inning to earn the lone Leatherneck RBI, with a blast to left field scoring Megan Leonard. Leonard and Abrianna Gracia also recorded hits in the game, while Kaylee Ketcherside and Ami Ill found their way on-base with a combined three walks. Abby Carlin pitched all six innings, striking out two while allowing four earned runs across 27 Billiken batters faced.
 
Game two: Western Illinois 3 – 11 Saint Louis
Emily Price started in the circle, allowing five hits and four earned runs before being replaced by Savannah Rodriguez in the second inning. Rodriguez went 1.2 innings and struck out two, allowing one hit and no runs, before being Maddy Anderson entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the game while striking out two Billiken batters.
 
Western's offense scored found some rhythm late in the game, scoring all three runs in the top of the fifth inning. After Daytona Dooley walked, Megan Leonard and Torince Muczynski hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Piper Foote then singled to score Dooley, and Georgia Rea hit a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to score Leonard. Abrianna Gracia would then add an RBI single with runners at first and third to give Western its third run of the inning. Muczynski finished 2-2 with two singles and one run scored, her first multi-hit game of the 2022 season. Megan Leonard, Abrianna Gracia, Piper Foote and Ami Ill all recorded hits in the game, while Daytona Dooley got on base with a fifth inning base on balls.
 
The Leathernecks are back in action on Wednesday (March 23) facing Missouri on the road, and welcomes St. Thomas to Macomb for the opening weekend of Summit League action next weekend.
