WIU Falls in Opening Game of SLU Series

Leathernecks, Billikens play two more on Saturday (March 19).

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Friday (March 18), falling 0-8 to the St. Louis University Billikens. Western Illinois will have two games on Saturday to potentially win the three-game series.

The bats were active early for Western Illinois, with Kaylee Ketcherside and Ami Ill hitting back-to-back singles to open up the game. Georgia Rea found her way on base with a fielder's choice, but Western was unable to capitalize and entered the bottom of the first inning still tied at zero. It looked again like the Leathernecks might make some noise in the third inning, as Emily Price singled after a Georgia Rea walk. Despite the momentum, however, WIU was unable to score either runner. The offense found a few more hits down the stretch of the game but was unable to plate any runs.

Ami Ill, Georgia Rea, Abrianna Gracia and Torince Muczynski combined with Ketcherside and Price to record seven total hits, and Ketcherside's 2-3 performance at the plate marked her fourth multi-hit game of the 2022 season. Georgia Rea's power translated after hitting two homeruns in her last three games, doubling to left field in the top of the fifth inning. Rea is now the team leader in extra base-hits with seven, while Ketcherside tied for second on the team with her 14 hits this season. Abby Carlin struck out two in two innings of work, allowing three hits and three earned runs. Maddy Anderson replaced Carlin in the third inning, pitching two more innings and striking out one.

The teams have two games scheduled for tomorrow, facing off at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
