Leathernecks drop pair at Racer Classic

WIU turns focus to Northern Kentucky

MURRAY, Kent. – The Western Illinois softball team dropped a pair of games in Murray, Kentucky on Monday, falling to Evansville 7-2, then to Murray State 2-0 to close out play at the Racer Classic with a 1-2 record.

Murray State 2, Western Illinois 0
In the day's second contest, starting pitcher Abby Carlin (4-4) gave the Leathernecks a solid outing, tossing six innings of two-run, three-hit ball while striking out two.
A two-run single in the third inning was the only blemish on Carlin's afternoon.
The Leathernecks managed one hit on the day, as Ami Ill continued her solid play at the Racer Classic with a 1-3 performance at the plate.
 
 
GAME 1
Evansville 7, Western Illinois 2
In the opening game against Evansville, the Leathernecks fell behind early to the Purple Aces as Evansville jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the third.
Evansville would tack on two more runs in the fourth and add one in the fifth, taking a 5-0 lead.
The Purple Aces put the game away in sixth with a pair of runs.
Western was able to score a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Georgia Rea connected on a two-run homer.
The blast plated Ami Ill, who reached base earlier in the inning with a single.
Ill had a pair of hits in the loss.
In the circle, Emily Price tossed 3.2 innings of four-run, five-hit, three strikeout ball.
The Leathernecks continue their tour of the Bluegrass State, visiting Northern Kentucky on Tuesday.
First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
