WIU Men Drop Road Contest to UMKC

Leathernecks move to 14-10 on the season, will play at Western Hall on Thursday (Feb. 10).

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck men's basketball team played on Saturday (Feb. 5), falling 82-91 to the Roos of Kansas City at the Swinney Center in Kansas City, Mo. With the loss, Western Illinois moves to 14-10 on the season and 5-7 against Summit League opposition.
 
After Kansas City took a 21-12 lead with 12:26 remaining in the first half, Western Illinois went on a 9-0 run to bring the game to within three points. Both teams would trade buckets the rest of the half, and WIU trailed by just three points at halftime. Western improved its shooting percentage from the first period to the second and scored more points in the second 20 minute period, but it wasn't enough as Kansas City won 91-82.
 
Luka Barisic had yet another strong outing in a run of good form, scoring 25 points and making 5-11 from deep while grabbing ten rebounds and blocking one shot. Trenton Massner scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, dishing out four assists and finishing the game with two steals. Colton Sandage finished with 14 points and four rebounds, and Tamell Pearson scored ten points to go with nine rebounds (five offensive). Will Carius scored nine points, Cameron Burrell had another solid outing off the WIU bench with four points and seven rebounds, and KJ Lee scored four points in a season-high 17 minutes of action.
 
As a team Western shot 29-65 (44.6%), making eight shots from deep and 16 from the line. The Leathernecks controlled the glass, outrebounding UMKC 40-29 and while grabbing 14 offensive rebounds and scoring 11 second-chance points. The team scored 40 points in the paint and six in transition, while the bench chipped in eight points. The Leatherneck defense finished with three blocks and four steals, forcing eight turnovers that were converted into 13 points.
 
Western Illinois is back in action on Thursday (Feb. 10), hosting the North Dakota State Bison at Western Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
