Leatherneck Women's Basketball Falls to Denver

Western will be back in Macomb for one final game on Monday (Feb. 28).

DENVER, Colo. — The Western Illinois women (14-13 overall, 5-11 in the Summit League) fell in their final regular season road contest on Saturday, losing to Denver 77-55. 

Denver made five of its first six from three and shot 8-12 from the floor in the first period, grabbing a 24-14 lead after one. In the second, Denver continued to hit shots while Western remained cold. The Leathernecks went 3-15 from the field in the second period, including 0-7 from three, falling behind 43-22 at halftime. Things would not get better after the break for Western as Denver once again went 8-12 from the field in a quarter, outscoring the Leathernecks 23-12 in the third, taking a 66-34 lead after three. Western had its best quarter in the final 10 minutes, going 8-13 from the field and outscoring the Pioneers 21-11 in the final period but still falling 55-77

For the game, Western went 20-57 from the field (35.1 percent), 2-21 from three (9.5 percent) and 13-20 from the line (65 percent). Denver, on the other hand, went 26-56 (46.4) from the field, 11-29 (37.9) from three and 14-20 (70 percent) from the line. Denver's bench also gave the Pioneers a big lift as the reserves scored 40 points. Evan Zars led the Leatherneck offense, scoring 19 points on 9-14 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Elizabeth Lutz scored seven and had team highs in rebounds (seven), assists (two) and steals (three). Jada Thorpe added 10 points and two assists, three steals, and Danni Nichols scored nine.

Western returns home for its final regular season game, hosting South Dakota at 6 p.m. on Monday. The game will be Senior Night for the Leathernecks.
