Leathernecks Fall in Tournament Opener

| By:

Western Illinois will play four more games during the next two days.

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Friday (Feb. 18), falling 5-1 to the Longwood University Lancers in the team's first game of the Razorback Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

In the top of the third inning Western Illinois generated some momentum, with Georgia Rea singling up the middle with one out. After two wild pitches, Rea was at third with two outs, but Western was unable to convert and entered the bottom of the inning down 3-0. In the top of the sixth, Western Illinois' seniors came up with a huge play, with Ami Ill hitting a single up the middle and stealing second, before Savannah Rodriguez stepped up to hit her in. Rodriguez finished the game 2-3, having hit another single up the middle in the fourth inning. Ami Ill, Jorja Hudson and Georgia Rea also added hits as the Leathernecks finished with five total in the game, and Rea added a base on balls to finish the game 1-2. Ill was the beneficiary of that Rodriguez single, scoring her fourth run of the season.

Rodriguez also started in the circle and pitched four innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two. She was replaced by Emily Price in the fifth inning, who closed out the game with three strikeouts across two innings of work.

Western Illinois is back in action tomorrow, facing Wichita State at 10 a.m. and Illinois at 4:45 p.m.
