WIU Softball Goes 1-1 in Final Day at Rosemont Dome

| By:

After falling 9-0 in game one, Western responded with a 9-1 victory over Ball State.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Sunday (Feb. 13), facing Murray State and Ball State in day three of the Rosemont Dome Tournament, hosted by DePaul. Western split the two games that were played, falling 9-0 in the first matchup against Murray State and defeating Ball State 9-1 in the second game.

"We played five quality teams this past weekend and our hope was that we would compete hard and make adjustments game by game. With so many young players we knew it would be important to take advantage of teachable moments when they came up," head coach Alisa Goler said. "There are always nerves on opening weekend and sometimes confidence can sway if you don't see results immediately. Overall, I'm really proud of this group for finishing strong today. We'll be back to work this week to prepare for the Arkansas tournament."

Game one: Western Illinois 0 – 9 Murray State
Maddy Anderson got her first start in the circle of the 2022 season, pitching 1.2 innings while allowing five hits, four runs (two earned) and striking out one. Emily Price pitched the game's next two innings and struck out one as the Racers were able to extend their lead to nine. Lilli Weir came on to face two batters, allowing one hit and bringing the fourth inning to a close.

Gabriela Drager recorded her first multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-2 with two singles, while Jorja Hudson got on base with a fourth-inning single of her own. Kayla Zamora's strong form continued with a double in the game's opening at-bat, extending her hitting streak to five games – a streak that includes four extra base hits, two triples and an RBI.

Game two: Western Illinois 9 – 1 Ball State
Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle for Western Illinois, pitching two innings that saw her allow one run while striking out two. Abby Carlin then entered the game and closed the door, allowing just two hits in three scoreless innings of work. In total, Ball State recorded four hits and one run, while the Leatherneck offense ignited.

It all started in the third inning, when an error at first put Ami Ill on base. After an eventual stolen and Savannah Rodriguez walk, Georgia Rea singled to right field to score Ill.  Another error by the Cardinal defense would lead to a Western score, and the Leathernecks finished the third inning with a multi-run lead.

Western's offense ignited during the fifth inning, starting with an Ami Ill bunt. Doubles by Bella Alvarez, Georgia Rea and Kayla Zamora would pair with a Kaylee Ketcherside single and Abrianna Gracia walk to put six runs on the board and extend the Leatherneck lead to 9-1, ending the game.

Western Illinois is back in action this Friday (Feb. 18), opening up a five-game weekend with a game against tournament-hosts Arkansas. First pitch in Fayetteville is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
