Leatherneck Softball Wins First Game of 2022

The Leathernecks went 1-1, falling to Butler at 12 p.m. but rebounding to defeat Western Michigan in the evening game.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Saturday (Feb. 12), facing Butler and Western Michigan in the second day of the Rosemont Dome Tournament and winning the team's first game of the 2022 season.

Game one: Western Illinois 2 - 6 Butler
After a slow start the bats were awaken in the fifth inning, where six total runs crossed home plate, but unfortunately for the Leathernecks, momentum favored the opposite side. Jorja Hudson set the tone with a leadoff double, and another extra-base hit -- a double by Kayla Zamora -- punched in the team's first run.

Butler narrowly outhit the Leathernecks, 8-6, in the early afternoon matchup, and each side left six on-base. The Leathernecks put themselves in positions for success, with runners advancing to second or third base in the third, fourth, and fifth frames, but were unable to bring them home. BU closed the contest with six straight outs.

Savannah Rodriguez received the starting nod in the circle and went the distance for six complete innings. The Woodbridge, Ill., native fanned nine batters in her first appearance this season, while offensively, Hudson finished 2-for-3 as the only Leatherneck with a multi-hit performance.

Game two: Western Illinois 2 - 1 Western Michigan
Lilli Weir got her first start for the purple and gold, allowing two hits and striking out two in 2.2 scoreless innings of work. In the bottom half of the first, Piper Foote singled to left to score Ami Ill, giving the Leathernecks an early 1-0 lead. Western's lead held all the way until the seventh inning, when an RBI single by WMU with one out tied the game at one.

It didn't take long for Western to reclaim the lead, however, with Kayla Zamora leading off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple to center field -  her second triple in as many days and third extra base hit of the tournament. Zamora scored off the very next at bat after Ami Ill hit a sacrifice fly to center field and the Leathernecks took a 2-1 victory.

Lilli Weir pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out two. Abby Carlin was credited with the win, coming on for Weir and pitching the game's final 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run. Five different Leathernecks recorded a hit in the game, including Kaylee Ketcherside who got on base for the first time in her collegiate career. Savannah Rodriguez singled in the first inning and made it three-straight games with at least one hit, while Ami Ill finished 1-3 with the game-winning RBI.

Western Illinois plays twice tomorrow, facing Murray State at 9 a.m. and Ball State at 11:30 a.m.
