Leathernecks Open Season at Rosemont Dome

The Leathernecks faced Bowling Green and Ball State.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team opened its regular season on Friday (Feb. 10), playing two games and falling in both games. The Leathernecks will play four more games across both Saturday (Feb. 12) and Sunday (Feb. 13).

It was Abby Carlin on the mound for the Leathernecks to start the first game against Bowling Green, and four newcomers were part of the starting lineup as well: Kayla Zamora at shortstop, Kaylie Reynolds behind the plate, Megan Leonard at third and Georgia Rea at first. Western struggled to get the bats rolling, but Piper Foote got her first hit of the season and Zamora legged out a triple to right for her first hit as a collegiate softball player.

Carlin pitched four innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out four. Maddy Anderson came on in relief for the final three innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out one.

Against Ball State in game two, it was Emily Price starting in the circle for the first time in her Leatherneck career, with Piper Foote moving up in the lineup to bat cleanup and Gabriela Drager playing at second. Ball State would take a commanding 6-0 lead in the second inning, but the Leatherneck offense responded with a four-run third inning. Ami Ill singled to left-center to score Megan Leonard and Maddy Anderson, and a fielders choice and throwing error scored Ill and Kayla Zamora soon after, cutting the Ball State lead to two after three innings of action.

The Leatherneck offense would not score the rest of the way while Ball State added one more and the game went final at 4-7. Western Illinois finished with four runs on five hits, earning two bases on balls. Georgia Rea recorded the first hit of her collegiate career, while Daytona Dooley and Savannah Rodriguez also getting on base in the game. Lilli Weir struck out two and didn't allow any earned runs in 1.1 innings of relief work, and Abby Carlin pitched the game's final 3.1 innings while allowing two hits and striking out two.

Western is back in action at 12 p.m. tomorrow for a matchup with Butler, and will face the Broncos of Western Michigan at 5 p.m.
