Wulf, Wenzel Lead WIU at South Dakota State

SDSU Sweeps WIU

Brookings, S.D. – Western Illinois fell to South Dakota State in straight sets 7-25, 11-25, 24-26. WIU falls to 4-23 overall and 0-15 in conference play.

SET 1
South Dakota State got an early 5-0 lead before Brittany Wulf would get WIU on the board with her first kill. Kennedy Bauer would get a kill to have Western Illinois go back to back and bring them within three. South Dakota State would get two points back before Wulf found the hardwood again with another kill. Elizabeth Ziegler would help chip away at the WIU deficit as she would get a kill right after Wulf. South Dakota State would use a 17-3 run that would finish off the first set 25-7

SET 2
South Dakota State would jump in front in the second set 4-1 before Grace Kremer would get her first kill of the set. SDSU would continue their early run, stretching their lead out to 9-2. Brittany Wulf ended the SDSU run with a kill of her own. The Jackrabbits would keep extending their lead using a 6-0 and 6-1 run to finish set two ahead 25-12.

SET 3
Brittany Wulf would start on fire in set three. She would open the set with a kill and follow it up with an assist block and another kill, helping WIU jump in front 3-0. After SDSU gets a kill, Wulf strikes again as she gets her third kill of the set. WIU would keep the energy up, with Elizabeth Ziegler and Julianna Schmidt teaming up for a block. Ziegler would give WIU their largest lead (6-1) when she would get a kill of her own. SDSU used a 7-2 run before two Jackrabbits' mistakes gave WIU a 10-8 lead. South Dakota State would pull ahead midway through the third set, taking the lead to match point. Down to their final point, WIU would find Brittany Wulf three times in a row to tie the match at 24. SDSU would get the last two points to complete the sweep 26-24

Brittany Wulf led the WIU offense with 13 kills. Hailey Sperling had seven kills in the match, respectively. Karli Wenzel had 16 digs and dished out eight assists. Gabby DePersio also had eight assists. WIU had three team blocks in the afternoon.

WIU will finish their road season next weekend when they travel to St. Thomas.
