Sperling's Double Double not enough Against St. Thomas

WIU falls 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Western Illinois Volleyball team fell in a conference matchup to St. Thomas on Saturday (Nov. 12). The Leathernecks fell in straight sets 22-25, 18-25, 16-25. WIU falls to 4-24 overall and 0-16 in conference play.

SET 1
Brittany Wulf gave WIU the early lead 2-1 lead with her first kill of the set. St. Thomas would respond with an 8-1 run forcing a Western Illinois timeout. Out of the break, both teams would trade, pushing St. Thomas's lead out to 16-10. With the score 17-11, WIU would get a kill from Elizabeth Ziegler to start a 5-1 run. Both Grace Kremer and Hailey Sperling would get their own kills during the run. St. Thomas would push their lead out to 21-17 before a 3-0 that included Kennedy Bauer and Grace Kremer kills, forcing a St. Thomas timeout. After the timeout, St. Thomas would close the set out 25-22

SET 2
Set two saw St. Thomas jump in front 3-1. The Leathernecks would get back-to-back kills to tie the set at three. St. Thomas would pull back out in front 7-3 before WIU would get kills from Julianna Schmidt and Hailey Sperling. Brittany Wulf would top off the 3-0 run with an ace of her own. Both teams would trade points before an attack error by St. Thomas would tie the match at 11. With the match tied at 11, the Tommies would use a 9-2 run to open up their lead to seven (20-13). The Leathernecks would cut the deficit to four with a Kennedy Bauer kill before UST would take set two 25-18.

SET 3
Set three would start with both teams trying to gain control. A set that saw both teams tied at two, five, six, and seven would see ST. Thomas used a 6-0 run to go in front 13-7. Aubrey Putman would end the Tommies' run with a kill, making it a 13-8. St. Thomas would see their lead jump out to eight before a UST service error and an Elizabeth Ziegler kill would cut the deficit to six (19-13). The Leathernecks would run out of juice as the Tommies would take set three 25-16.

Hailey Sperling had a double-double on the afternoon with 11 kills and 12 digs. Brittany Wulf also contributed 11 kills and seven digs. Karli Wenzel led the Leathernecks with 15 digs. Senior Jessie Connell returned from injury to dish out 14 assists. Fellow senior Gabby DePersio also had 14 assists. WIU recorded three team blocks, with Julianna Schmidt having the lone solo block. Brittany Wulf had the only Leatherneck ace.

WIU will wrap up their conference season at home against Oral Roberts and Kansas City next week.
